Wolfgang Tillmans
Few artists have shaped the scope of contemporary art and influenced a younger generation more than Wolfgang Tillmans (b. 1968). Since the early 1990s, his work has epitomized a new kind of subjectivity in photography, pairing intimacy and playfulness with social critique and the persistent questioning of existing values and hierarchies. Through his seamless integration of genres, subjects, techniques, and exhibition strategies, he has expanded conventional ways of approaching the medium and his practice continues to address the fundamental question of what it means to create pictures in an increasingly image-saturated world.
Tillmans was the first photographer to win the Turner Prize in 2000.
The photographs presented here are featured in the major retrospective of Tillmans's work at Fondation Beyeler in Basel, on view through October 1. The exhibition is the museum's first comprehensive presentation of photography, and includes over 180 works spanning from 1986 to 2017. The artist was closely involved with the exhibition design, which also features a new audiovisual installation.
