Raoul De Keyser’s (1930–2012) enduring experimentation with painting made him one of the most celebrated artists of his time—and among the most influential of ours. In parallel with Frieze London and Frieze Masters, David Zwirner presents an online exhibition of paintings by De Keyser, alongside appreciations from contemporary artists Harold Ancart, Suzan Frecon, Rebecca Morris, Tomma Abts, and Luc Tuymans, who continue to be deeply impacted by the Belgian master’s practice.
In translating the concrete world in surprising ways that continue to defy expectations, De Keyser has played a significant role in the proliferation of European abstraction. His works balance abstraction and figuration, and feel unfamiliar—yet right. “Brain and heart crane to see over the shoulder of the eye,” The New Yorker wrote in 2009, “when a willing viewer beholds De Keyser’s unassumingly perfect art.”
This collection includes a compendium of rare and highly coveted works by De Keyser, and is presented in celebration of the modern master.
