Raoul De Keyser: Replay Again

David Zwirner is pleased to present Raoul De Keyser: Replay Again, on view in Hong Kong. This exhibition expands on the gallery’s presentation of De Keyser’s work in Hong Kong in 2021. Among the notable works that will be on view are representative paintings from the Belgian artist’s seminal Come on, play it again; Hal, and Hayward series, made during the height of his career, from the middle of the 1980s to the 2000s.

These works feature biomorphic and geometric forms, squares, lines, and dots, with each of them seeming to follow a different compositional logic. The title of the series carries musical connotations as if encouraging a jazz pianist to keep improvising over a tune, while simultaneously suggesting the possibility of infinite variation. 

當中每件作品似乎都遵循着不同的構圖邏輯,但仍有賴於對⽣物樣態、幾何形式、⽅形、線條和圓點等元素的凝練運⽤。這個系列的標題具有與⾳樂相關的隱含意義,彷彿在⿎舞⼀位即興演奏的爵⼠鋼琴師,同時也暗⽰了無限變化的可能性。

A key example of the subtle experimentalism and radicality of De Keyser’s painterly work, Hayward I (1993) is part of a series of works the artist made on the occasion of the important 1994 group exhibition Unbound: Possibilities in Painting at the Hayward Gallery, London.

Two notable earlier works, Hal (1984/1985) and Untitled (1984–1985), show the continuation of De Keyser’s recurring chalk-line motif, which first appeared in works from the beginning of the artist’s career in the 1960s and early ’70s and is characterized by two thick white lines dividing the composition and interacting with other fields and layers of color.

展覽中幾件著名的早期作品突出了藝術家創作中反覆出現的視覺主題。其中包括《哈爾門站》,1984/1985年 以及與其相關的《無題》(1984-1985),兩件作品都延續了藝術家粉筆線的主題,這個主題首次出現在德·凱澤1960和70年代早期的作品中,極具特點地以兩條粗大的白線分割着整體構圖,並且與其他區塊和顏色層次互動。
