Yayoi Kusama, Seeking Happiness, 2012 (detail)
Coinciding with Yayoi Kusama’s current exhibition at our Chelsea galleries, this focused selection of editioned prints features the same motifs the artist explores in her paintings, sculptures, and installations—which have made her one of the most celebrated artists of our time.
The works feature repeating faces in biomorphic shapes, a well-known motif in Kusama’s oeuvre that is particularly present in one of the artist’s most celebrated and iconic series, My Eternal Soul (2009-2021). This series of prints is based on acrylic paintings made in 2004-2005 and currently on view at Guggenheim Bilbao.
The repetition of forms (eyes, noses, and mouths) and the repetitive process of printmaking itself reflect the obsession that has long been central to the artist’s work.

“I have been making prints ever since I was captivated by their allure, and am constantly overwhelmed by the brilliance arising from within the process of making them.… I wish to make countless duplicates of the same visual field and spread them across the world.”

“They are an explosion of ideas and represent my preoccupation with infinity and the search for peace and love which has always been at the heart of my work. Through their vibrant colors, I feel my happiness; their strength and clarity flood me with energy.”
