ART021 Shanghai

David Zwirner is pleased to participate in ART021 2023. Highlights include a focused presentation of works by Josef Albers from his Variant/Adobe series, and drawings by Anni Albers, paired alongside works by artists who studied with them during their highly influential teaching years in the United States.

From 1933 to 1949, the Alberses taught at Black Mountain College, which Ruth Asawa attended in the late 1940s. The gallery will present works on paper by Asawa, who remained close with both Alberses for the rest of their lives and whose drawings are the subject of an extensive survey currently on view at the Whitney Museum of American Art. The presentation will also feature recent drawings by Richard Serra, who likewise studied under Josef Albers at Yale University in the 1960s. The two artists worked together on Albers’s groundbreaking book Interaction of Color.

In addition, the gallery will present important sculptures and paintings by Merrill Wagner, showcasing the artist’s distinctive approach to materiality, and debut a new painting by the artist Neo Rauch, who will have a solo exhibition entitled Field Signs at David Zwirner Hong Kong opening on November 16.

David Zwirner will also feature works by artists including Francis Alÿs, Katherine Bernhardt, Marcel Dzama, Yayoi Kusama, Sherrie Levine, Oscar Murillo, Alice Neel, Josh Smith, and Wolfgang Tillmans.
