Raymond Pettibon: Snow Leopards

“I’ve never felt that my work has to be confined to the white cube of the museum or gallery world.”
—Raymond Pettibon

This viewing room highlights ten newly created works by Pettibon depicting snow leopards, several of which were featured in his recent collaboration with Artistic Director Kim Jones on the Dior Men's Winter 2019 collection.

A longtime admirer of Pettibon’s text works and zoological drawings, Jones was especially drawn to Pettibon’s sketches of leopards—a pattern with a long history at the Dior house. “The inspiration comes from the artworks of Raymond, from the more romantic part of his work, and tying that into the loves of Monsieur Dior,” says Jones.

Never seen before, this collection of drawings celebrates the collaboration and coincides with the artist’s inaugural solo exhibition at David Zwirner Paris.

"The works were like any of my pieces that would appear in one of my books or shows. That is, they were not designs or illustrations. It was Kim Jones’s inspiration to make fashion out of them."

"Kim knew that I had made drawings with animals in them and asked me to make some new works with leopards, specifically. These spotted patterns were then used for prints on the fabrics."

"Whenever I work with artists, I give them an idea of what we need to achieve but I respect their vision and want them to do what they want to do. I think that’s the secret of a great collaboration."
