David Zwirner is pleased to participate in Frieze New York (https://frieze.com/fairs/frieze-new-york) with a dual presentation of new works created specifically for the fair by Harold Ancart (https://www.davidzwirner.com/artists/harold-ancart) and Christopher Williams (https://www.davidzwirner.com/artists/christopher-williams). Since the fair’s inauguration in 2012—when the gallery exhibited a selection of Minimalist artists, including Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, John McCracken, Sol LeWitt, and Fred Sandback—David Zwirner has focused on solo and two-artist presentations. In 2013, a solo presentation of works by Thomas Ruff spanned from 1980 to 1984. Dual presentations in subsequent years were Donald Judd and Yayoi Kusama (2014), John McCracken and Franz West (2015), Isa Genzken and Lisa Yuskavage (2016), Carol Bove and William Eggleston (2017), and Josh Smith and Jordan Wolfson (2018).

The Belgian-born, New York–based artist Harold Ancart works in various media including painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, and sculpture. In his work, he depicts subjects that naturally invite contemplation such as the horizon, clouds, flowers, icebergs, and flames. At Frieze New York the artist will debut a series of new works that takes the matchstick as its subject. As the artist notes, the matchstick "is something that people tend to pass over because of its absolute banality, but, nevertheless, it has huge poetic potential."1  Christopher Williams’s work critically investigates the medium of photography and the transformations of industrial and post-industrial culture, focusing particularly on the structures of representation and classification in modern society. Kochgeschirr Adapted for Use, the artist’s presentation at Frieze New York, is an adaptation of Williams’s theater production Stage Play, which was presented in Zurich in May 2017. The elements of this restaging include five new photographs, which are themselves adaptations and restagings of themes and imagery that the artist has previously explored; two silkscreen posters; a modular wall; a suite of Franz West–designed furniture; and the David Zwirner sales team, who are repurposed as the theater troupe.
