For the past seven years, Diana Thater has explored nature as a frontier infiltrated by culture in her color-saturated installations constructed of video monitors and projections that screen images of parks, gardens, animal-training facilities, and wildlife preserves. This show, organized by the Portland Museum of Art and presented in Minneapolis by curatorial assistant Douglas Fogle, provides a sampling of Thater’s “interior” landscapes, which are often shaped by the site’s architecture and completed by the viewer. The Walker has also commissioned a piece that involves the projection of videos of western landscapes onto the building’s windows as well as the illumination of the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden below.
