Horizontality/Verticality was an exhibition comprising On Kawara’s "I GOT UP" and "I WENT" series. The two series of works were gathered on either side of a long room and installed opposite one another. Framed sheets from the "I WENT" series were hung in chronological order, and opposite them, the postcards of the "I GOT UP" series, created in parallel, were installed in a vitrine spanning the same length of the framed sheets.
For the “I WENT” series, On Kawara recorded his movements each day on copies of city maps or maps using red ink. With “I GOT UP”, he would mail two postcards to friends, stamped with the time he got out of bed. The title of the exhibition, Horizontality / Verticality evokes the contrasting perspectives of each mode of record keeping.
