Toba Khedoori’s first solo exhibition in Germany is now open at the 

 in Kassel, on view from October 9, 2021, through February 20, 2022. Curated by Moritz Wesseler, this major survey presents twenty-three works created between 1994 and 2021.

The exhibition includes detailed drawings of ordinary motifs—from buildings and windows to grass, clouds, and horizons, among others—on large-scale sheets of paper treated with wax, as well as paintings on canvas that Khedoori began making in 2008. Considerably smaller than Khedoori’s works on paper, the paintings consider the tension between human beings and the natural world.

“The Australian artist with Iraqi roots develops a philosophy of the everyday in her impressive works painted with old-masterly precision…Toba Khedoori questions the philosophical foundations and individual and aesthetic preconditions of our perception and, above all, how we locate ourselves in this world,” noted Eva Claudia Scholtz, Executive Director of the Hessische Kulturstiftung.

To accompany the exhibition, the Fridericianum will also publish a catalogue featuring an essay by curator Mark Godfrey. Khedoori will present a solo exhibition at David Zwirner in New York in 2023, of which selected works are included in the Fridericianum show.

Celebrating Noah Davis

 announced today the winners of their inaugural Noah Davis Prize. Named for the visionary artist and curator who co-founded the museum, the prize honors three curators who are transforming their respective fields and broadening audiences for culture.

The winners are Candice Hopkins for 

Art for a New Understanding: Native Voices, 1950s to Now

Judson Dance Theater: The Work is Never Done

. The prize, which is presented in partnership with the 

, endows $25,000 to each winner. The Underground Museum will also present a curatorial symposium featuring the award recipients in Spring 2022.

Co-founded in 2012 by 

 and his wife, the artist Karon Davis, The Underground Museum is a non-profit arts and culture space dedicated to exhibitions and cultural programming. Based in the Arlington Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles, the Museum offers free classes to the local community, as well as food distribution and events for adults, children, and families in its space and garden. The Museum will reopen in January 2022 with an exhibition of paintings spanning Davis’s career, organized by Helen Molesworth.

The Underground Museum Announces Winners of the Inaugural Noah Davis Prize

, the fashion label unveiled designer Matthew M. Williams’s collaboration with 

, in which Smith’s psychedelic, vibrant paintings are interpreted into a range of garments.

“Matt showed up in my studio and we started cooking together…We made some delicious things...This collection is a miracle. The sky is the limit,” Smith said.

“Everything in the collection, from the embroideries to the trim, is all inspired and from source material that Josh created,” Williams told 

. “I love how honest his work is and how obsessive it is to paint the same motif over and over and over again. He has his own way, a really efficient way of working where he’s pulling from the environment around him. It’s so textural and American; that’s something that I really connect with.”

Josh Smith Collaborates with Givenchy’s Matthew M. Williams 

David Zwirner, alongside twenty-six other galleries, will participate in the Art Dealers Association of America’s (ADAA) 

 in New York on Saturday, November 6, from 3–5 PM. The gallery walk is timed in conjunction with The Art Show at the Park Avenue Armory.
