DeCarava’s photographs are featured on garments in the brand’s Spring 2022 collection

May 2022

For Spring 2022, Supreme is collaborating with the Roy DeCarava Archives. The garments reference two of the artist’s seminal photographs—Malcolm X (1964) and Mississippi freedom marcher, Washington D.C. (1963). The photographs will appear on Supreme’s T-shirts and hoodies, available in a variety of colors.

Born in Harlem in 1919, for over sixty years, DeCarava created tonal, evocative photographs of life in his native city and beyond. “DeCarava’s work is itself the best of both worlds,” wrote art critic Roberta Smith, “visually rigorous yet incalculably sensitive to the human predicament and the psychology of everyday life, especially concerning but not limited to African-Americans.”

Profits from the Roy DeCarava collection will benefit the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, based in Harlem. The collection will be released in stores and online on May 19, 11:00 AM ET in the U.S. and elsewhere, and on May 21, 11:00 AM JST in Japan.
