Josh Smith at Frieze Sculpture

Josh Smith’s new sculpture, Friend, is included in Frieze Sculpture 2023, curated by Fatoş Üstek. Smith’s largest sculpture to date, the bronze work continues his longstanding interest in sculptural media and the Grim Reaper symbol, which he has explored extensively in his paintings. Smith noted, “the Reaper is translated perfectly out of the paintings and into the sculptures. I found the materials and they naturally formed into the Reaper sculptures.” Friend was cast in bronze using advanced 3D scans of maquettes made from mollusk shells and other materials. The heavily worked surface of the reddish-patinated bronze highlights the process of the work’s creation, transforming it into a meditation on the medium itself.
