February 2023

February 1–March 8, 2023  Fundación Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Madrid (FSRRM) is pleased to present the first exhibition in Spain by the Brazilian artist Lucas Arruda (São Paulo, 1983). Featuring over twenty paintings created over the last ten years, it is also his first single-theme show to date on forests.  In Arruda’s paintings, slide projections and light installations, landscapes hover between abstraction and figuration, between apparition and emptiness to examine contemporary mental states. With each new gaze, these experiences are framed in a process of construction and reconstruction of memory. Arruda places us in an atmosphere rife with visual and metaphysical questions about heaven and earth, the ethereal and the solid, imagination and reality.  In words of the curator, Hand Ulrich Obrist, ‘Arruda’s research is developed around landscape, and this exhibition proposes a live experience that operates through the mediation of light and the gaze, opening up to unexpected experiences, giving rise to narratives and encounters, creating a bond between visibility and invisibility. Assum Preto is deployed in the space in such a way that no two visits to this complex and stimulating exhibition are the same, enabling it to develop a life of its own.’  Learn more at the Ateneo in Madrid.
