Raymond Saunders was included in the landmark exhibition Contemporary Black Artists in America at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Curated by Robert M. Doty, the exhibition sought to capture the multitudes of Black American aesthetics at the time. It elicited vociferous critique and conversation from the art world at the time for its emphasis on abstraction, and remains today a significant exhibition of Black artists from this time.
