Hunter College Gallery, New York
1998
March 4–April 11, 1998
In 1998 Hunter College Gallery presented an exhibition of Saunders's recent works, curated by his lifelong friend W. H. Bailey and celebrating Saunders’s accomplishments as both an artist and an educator. In the accompanying catalogue, Bailey writes, “Through the selectivity of Sanders’s eye, these imprints, along with discarded objects–considered litter by almost everyone–become a multitude of highly-charged, vigorous elements that reveal much about ourselves. Familiar everyday paradoxes, complex interactions of people, the process of education, the constant struggles between majorities and minorities are a few of the concerns confronting us. From the well of material discarded on the streets, Saunders recomposes works of strength, eloquence and verve. Each item in his hands becomes a fragment of our cultural situation.”
