Thomas Ruff, Haus Nr. 12 II, 1989

Malkastenforum, Düsseldorf, Germany

November 16, 2024–April 21, 2025

Thomas Ruff will be the subject of the inaugural exhibition in the Malkastenforum, the new building of the Malkasten artists' association founded in Düsseldorf, Germany in 1848. The exhibition includes works from Ruff’s most prominent series, including Porträts (Portraits), Häuser (Houses), nudes and d.o.pe. The scope of his subject matter–portraits, architectural and nude photographs–exemplifies Ruff’s work in almost every genre in art history.

Thomas Ruff also pays homage to the city of Düsseldorf with portraits of young artists from the 1980s as well as Düsseldorf buildings from the same period.

One of the most important contemporary photo artists of our time, Ruff studied under Bernd Becher at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1977 to 1985 and, as Becher's successor, took over the class for fine art and photography from 2000 to 2006. In 2021, Thomas Ruff was elected to the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts. Thomas Ruff lives and works in Düsseldorf.
