Ad Reinhardt’s first retrospective in Spain is now open at Fundación Juan March in Madrid, where it will be on view through January 16, 2022. One of the most comprehensive exhibitions of the artist’’s work in Europe to date, Ad Reinhardt: “Art Is Art and Everything Else Is Everything Else” presents a total of 118 works: forty-seven paintings and drawings alongside seventy-one books, magazines, newspapers, pamphlets, and other documentary material.

The exhibition title, which quotes Reinhardt, asserts the artist’s views on the nature of art and his determination to separate the realms of art and life. This sentiment is reflected in the show, which is divided into two sections with distinct entrances: “Art Is Art…” contains artworks, while “…and Everything Else Is Everything Else” displays relevant documents and reference material from Reinhardt’s career as a teacher, illustrator, and writer. Ranging from comic strips to lecture slides and essays, these illuminate Reinhardt’s commitment to the ideological, political, and social issues of his time.  A two-volume catalogue, available in English and Spanish, will accompany the exhibition.  Cover image: Ad Reinhardt, Untitled, 1938 (detail). © Anna Reinhardt / Vegap, Madrid, 2021
